While he is playing with his friends, his mother, the Queen, arrives and tells him that he must stop having fun and look after the kingdom. Prince Siegfried dreams of escaping. Following a magical flock of swans, he comes to a clearing by a lake, where four little swan cygnets begin to dance. The most beautiful swan transforms into Princess Odette and tells him that he has been cursed by the evil sorcerer Von Rothbart to turn into a swan during the day and back to his natural form at night. As the prince and Odette dance, they begin to fall in love. The story continues with Prince Siegfried attending his birthday party, being tricked into proposing to Von Rothbart's daughter Odile, and returning to the lake to fight the evil sorcerer.
